We have to eat in order to survive, but food tends to push us beyond our needs for survival and we begin indulging beyond our wants for food. Most people picture food addiction as people who are eating everything in sight. When you think of addiction, you think of doing anything you can to get food and walking through a supermarket could almost be a danger. However, with food addiction this is not the case.
Most people with food addictions will crave only select foods, sometimes known as comfort foods. They will harbor these foods and indulge in an eating binge only with what they crave.
As mentioned earlier, emotions can play a strong role in eating. This works when you begin feeling emotional distress and cling to your comfort foods for support. After a while of using this cycle, your brain begins to register food as a stress fixer and begins to crave it at the first sight of stress. After a while the body begins to feel a relief of emotions after they indulge in certain foods.
Another sign of food addiction is when you begin to lose control over your thoughts. Our brains are capable of processing different thoughts based on what goes on around us. But when food begins to take over, it is possible you may be suffering from a food addiction. If you find yourself thinking of food even though you just finished eating, you are on the verge of losing control.
The last symptom creates one of the biggest problems for food addicts because they get caught inside a cycle. Those who are addicted to eating often wish they can stop, even though they cant. When eating begins to affect a person’s weight, the person begins to develop a sense of disgust with them and their self-esteem begins to lower.
Once they have a low-self esteem, their brain signals emotional distress that causes the person to eat. This cycle is easily triggered and once it is triggered, it is difficult to stop. The media showing off perfect swimsuit bodies can be depressing to someone with an eating addiction that will cause them to eat, which will begin the cycle by lowering their self-esteem.
Food can be just as addicting than any illegal drug in the world. Food doesn’t have side effects and tastes delicious. We all love to indulge in our favorite foods every once in a while, but we have to know our limits to recognize when an innocent snack crosses the line to become a problem.
